Hey there, 2A!

Good afternoon 2A! :)

I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend and enjoying this cooler weather. We have a really exciting week ahead of us and here is what's coming up!

Book Fair: Tomorrow is the Arete Book Fair at Barnes and Noble! Don't forget to bring your voucher!

Poetry Recitations: Your child will be assessed on their recitation of Merry Autumn Days next week. Second grade will also be reciting Something Told the Wild Geese at our assembly Tuesday!

Read-a-thon Day: Read-A-Thon Day is taking place next Tuesday. Your child may come to school dressed as their favorite classical literature character, scientists, or historical figure. Please remember to fill out this costume proposal before Tuesday. We will have our classroom celebration from 11:50-1:10. Our school Assembly and afternoon buddy reading will take place from 1:30-2:25. Feel free to stop by in the afternoon for any of these events. We'd love to see you there!

Winter Concert: Our Winter Concert is quickly approaching! It will be at Higley Center for the Performing Arts on November 15th. Students’ attire for our performances is NOT school uniform. Gentlemen are expected to wear a plain white collard shirt, black pants, black socks and black closed toed shoes. Solid dark colored vests and ties are optional for gentlemen. Ladies are expected to wear a white top, black skirt, black tights and black closed toed shoes. Please have your 2nd graders at Higley Center for the Performing Arts by 5:00pm.
Please visit aretek-2music.blogspot.com or email jweddle@archwayarete.org for questions regarding the concert!

Here is what we are learning about this week in 2A:

Spalding: Next week we will have 20 words (with review words built in on Tuesday). There will be no Spalding homework assigned on Tuesday evening.
Monday: stream, talks, tiny, words, trust, extra, dress, beside, teach, happen
Wednesday: begun, collect, file, provide, sight, stood, fixed, fix, born

Grammar: Last week we added period, statement, declarative sentence to our Question & Answer Flow. This week we will talk about dividing the complete subject from the complete predicate. Ask your child if they know the difference between an adverb and an adjective!

Writing: Next up in Writing with Ease is a passage from Pilgrim's Progress. We will continue with our weekly procedure of narration, copywork, and dictation.

Math: We will complete our unit on measurement on Monday, and will then be getting into multiplication and division! These two new operations will take quite a bit of practice and may require a lot of encouragement, but rest assured "We can do hard things!" Fact fluency will greatly help your child better understand these concepts! Please continue to practice skip counting with your child by 2's, 3,s 5,s and 10's.

Science: Our Water Cycle unit will continue through studying condensation and precipitation. We will make a terrarium in class!

Literature: We will read Chapters 3 & 4 from The Boxcar Children. We will also work on writing an essay about courage (one of our core virtues) and making connections (text to text, text to world, and text to self).

Warmest,

Mr. High
